Micro-comment on the Gates case*

Two men got angry with one another. One of them was a cop. So he got to arrest the one who wasn't.

*In an effort to keep my 'opinion footprint' on overblown news stories down to an absolute minimum.

  1. Perhaps this happened: One man got angry and arrogant when asked to identify himself in a rented house. One man's job is to risk his life for the other...no matter how angry or arrogant... And, protect another citizen's property.

  2. As far as I know it it is not an arrestable offence in this country to be either angry or arrogant. Crowley is lucky Gates is not going to press charges.

  3. I think the defence of Crowley ought to start with the fact that he is human and makes mistakes, not with the suggestion that he mistook the situation for one in which his life was in danger. Then he looks incompetant.

  4. I think, in defense of Gates, one could begin with the observation that his life and career seems to be immersed in racial sensitivity. He probably over-reacted and Crowley probably over-reacted. I don't mean to say Crowley thought his life was in danger ...at all. But, things can spin out of control very quickly. Honestly, I would definitely want a police officer like Crowley on the street. I can do without Gates "you don't know who you are messing with" arrogance.
